Special Feature: It Seems Simple,But It’s Not – How to Constantly Maintain Cold Logistics

Part1 What does it mean
to keep cooling "all the time"?

Foods from all over the country and the world can be found in your neighborhood supermarket.
We are able to eat a variety of foods in a delicious and safe manner....
Did you know that what supports our food is "the steady effort to carry it while keeping it cool"?

Is behind the deliciousness cold ?

Don't you take them for granted?

Ice cream on a hot day.
Fresh and lush fruits and vegetables.
Tuna caught far from home.

Delicious food that you can eat all year round with no worries.
This is actually not an easy thing to do.

Just as you use refrigerators and freezers at home, the process of transporting food requires that the food be kept chilled "all the way through" at a low temperature appropriate for each product.

Why is it not easy to keep food cold "all the time"?

Pinch! Protect your products from temperature changes!

A logistics network that transports products from the production site to the consumer while keeping them chilled at an appropriate temperature is called a cold chain (low-temperature logistics).

In the "cold chain (low-temperature logistics)," it is necessary to devise ways to keep products cool "all the way" in such situations.

─ When storing in a refrigerated warehouse

The key link in the cold chain (cold logistics) is the refrigerated warehouses scattered throughout Japan.

These refrigerated warehouses are storage units with freezing/refrigeration functions.

Frozen foods are moved to this room, vegetables to another room, and so on, each product is moved to a storage unit that corresponds to the appropriate storage temperature and waits for shipment.

Even after the products have arrived at the refrigerated warehouse, we cannot let our guard down.
We take the utmost care in the warehouse to maintain a constant temperature in the storage room and to move products in and out of the storage room in a short period of time.

─ When loading and unloading goods from trucks

When trucks arrive at the distribution center, they stop at the loading/unloading entrance, called a berth, to unload the goods.

At this time, outside air must be prevented from entering the refrigerated warehouse as much as possible.
This is because outside air can cause the temperature inside the refrigerated warehouse to rise, which may cause products to melt or spoil in quality.

Since trucks come in a variety of shapes and sizes, logistics centers minimize air infiltration by installing devices called "dock shelters," which prevent outside air and wind and rain from entering by tightly sealing the berths and cargo beds, and by filling gaps in connecting parts with blankets and other devices.

─ When going through multiple locations

From the production area to the consumer, products are delivered through multiple distribution centers.

In the cold chain (low-temperature logistics), there are various points that must be taken care of to protect products from temperature changes, as shown in the scene introduced above.

To protect products and support safe and secure food,
Various efforts and innovations are made to maintain appropriate temperatures at each site, including storage at distribution centers as well as transportation by truck.

We support your food with logistics to keep it cool "all the time"!

We maintain appropriate temperatures at all locations, in all situations, and keep food chilled all the time.
Our abundant food is made possible through various efforts at the forefront of the cold chain (cold storage logistics).

The Nichirei Logistics Group specializes in cold chain logistics.
In Japan, we involved in three businesses related to cold chain logistics.

❶DC Business

Storage business that stores food products under low temperatures in refrigerated warehouses; in DC (distribution center: inventory storage type center) warehouses, maintaining appropriate temperatures and receiving/shipping the required number of products according to customer requests

Transportation and Delivery Business

Combining long-distance transportation with intra-regional delivery that picks up and delivers goods within an area centered on the major cities in each region, carrying them at the appropriate temperature.

❸Retail (TC) business

At the TC (Transfer Center: a transit center), perishables and chilled products delivered from multiple suppliers are consolidated and sorted for efficient delivery.

In addition to the three businesses,
Engineering business, which is responsible for the design, construction, and maintenance of low-temperature facilities at distribution centers
Information systems, which provides unique IT infrastructure optimized for low-temperature logistics
3PL business, which supports the planning of logistics strategies and the establishment of better logistics
Overseas business that utilizes know-how to develop cold chains overseas
We support every aspect of low-temperature logistics,

The Nichirei Logistics Group has the No. 1 market share in Japan in terms of refrigerated warehouse facility capacity.
We have knowledge and expertise in a wide range of cold chain (low-temperature logistics), and by combining them appropriately, we can provide optimal low-temperature logistics services that meet the needs of our shippers.
